Getting Leaf

Where do I get Leaf Viewer?

On Windows 10 (version 1809 or later) and Windows 11, from the Microsoft Store, which keeps it up to date, or as a direct download. On a Mac with macOS 12 or later, Apple silicon or Intel, as a direct download; the Mac App Store version is in Apple’s review. On Linux, from the Snap Store, as a .deb, .rpm, Arch package (our pacman repository), Flatpak or .tar.gz, or with one command: curl -fsSL https://leafviewer.app/install.sh | sh. Everything is on the download page.

What does it cost?

US$11.99, and free until 31 October 2026; after that you can try it free for two weeks. The Store offers its own trial; a downloaded copy works fully for 14 days and then asks for a licence. A licence bought from this website works on up to 10 of your computers, on Windows, Mac and Linux. A copy you get while it’s free stays free. A later price applies only to people who get Leaf after that, never backwards. Your licence includes updates to the current major version. Whether a new major version is free to existing owners, a discounted upgrade or a new purchase is decided when it comes out. The Store listing shows today’s price.

Unlocking a downloaded copy

Open About Leaf Viewer from the menu under the leaf mark (on a Mac, the Leaf Viewer menu) and choose Buy Leaf Viewer, Sign in or Enter a licence key. While Leaf is free, buying it costs nothing and the licence is yours for good. Leaf checks a licence with the server about once a day and keeps working offline for 30 days.

How does Leaf compare with other viewers?

See the comparison with File Viewer Plus, QuickLook and PowerToys Peek.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, within 30 days of purchase, with no reason needed: write to billing@leafviewer.com. The Microsoft Store’s own refund process also applies. See the terms.

Opening files

A file doesn’t open, or opens as plain text

Send us its file extension, and the file if you can, through the support form.

Double-clicking opens a different app

Leaf never takes a file type from an app you already use; it adds itself to “Open with” instead. To make Leaf the default for a type, click Opening files with Leaf in Leaf’s title bar and then Open Windows Settings, or go to Settings › Apps › Default apps › Leaf Viewer.

A document looks wrong

Press Ctrl+U to see the file’s source. If the source looks right but the page doesn’t, it’s a bug: send us the file if you can.

Leaf won’t edit or save

Leaf only reads; it never changes the files it opens. Edit in your usual app, and Leaf updates when you save.

Keyboard shortcuts

Press F1 or ? in Leaf for the full list. The common ones: Ctrl+O open, Ctrl+P print or save as PDF, F11 full screen, F fill the screen with a film, picture or model, Ctrl++ and Ctrl+− zoom, Ctrl+Shift++ and Ctrl+Shift+− text size, Space play and pause, C subtitles.

Appearance

Light or dark

Leaf follows Windows: change it in Settings › Personalisation › Colours. Documents keep the paper they are read on: a letter or a spreadsheet stays light, and code and films stay dark.

Security
